आज महाशिरात्री का व्रत है. आज के दिन हिंदू धर्म के लोग शिवजी की पूजा करते हैं. इस साल महाशिवरात्रि का पर्व पूरे देश में 21 फरवरी शुक्रवार के दिन मनाया जा रहा है. इस दिन निशीथ काल में यानी मध्यरात्रि में चतुर्दशी की तिथि रहेगी.

शास्त्रों में कहा गया है कि मध्यरात्रि में जिस दिन फाल्गुन कृष्ण चतुर्दशी हो उसी दिन शिवजी की पूजा होती है. यह दिन महाशिवरात्रि के नाम से जाना जाता है.

शास्त्रों के मुताबिक 21 फरवरी को शाम में 5 बजकर 20 मिनट के बाद से चतुर्दशी तिथि लग रही है. इससे पहले त्रयोदशी की तिथि रहेगी. ऐसे में शिवजी की पूजा शाम में किया जाना ज्यादा लाभदायक माना गया है.

शिव पुराण के अनुसार जो भक्त शिवरात्रि के दिन निशीथ काल में फूल, फल, नैवेद्य, चंदन से शिवजी की पूजा करते हैं और शिवपुराण का पाठ या महामृत्युंजय मंत्र का जाप करते हैं भोलेनाथ उन पर अति प्रसन्न होते हैं.

वैसे तो इस दिन श्रवण नक्षत्र और सर्वार्थ सिद्धि योग होने के कारण श्रद्धालु किसी भी समय शिवजी की पूजा करके पुण्य पा सकते हैं.

सुबह 8 बजकर 19 मिनट से लेकर 9 बजकर 44 मिनट तक लाभ का योग है. इसके बाद 11 बजकर 9 मिनट तक अमृत काल रहेगा. इस समय आरोग्य सुख के लिए शिवजी का अभिषेक कर सकते हैं.

इस दिन शिवजी के भक्त मंदिरों में जाकर शिवलिंग पर बेलपत्र, धतूरा, भांग और जल चढ़ाते हैं. भक्त नए नए वस्त्र पहनकर मंदिर जाते हैं और शिवजी की आराधना करते हैं.
